New Zealand PARTNERSHIP VISITOR VISA

Reuniting partners in New Zealand. Learn about eligibility, application process and visitor visa duration

If you're planning to visit your partner who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, or if your partner already holds or is applying for a work visa or student visa, this visa option allows you to join them in NZ. Whether you're in a long-distance relationship or simply want to reunite with your loved one, this visa provides a pathway to create lasting memories together.

Eligibility for a Partnership-Based Visitor Visa

To be eligible for a Partnership-Based Visitor Visa, you must meet these key criteria:

  • Genuine Relationship: You and your partner must be in a genuine and stable relationship. This includes spouses, partners in a civil union, or de facto partners. Evidence of a loving and committed relationship is crucial, including joint responsibilities, shared financial commitments, and proof of living together.

  • Partner Eligibility: Your partner must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, or hold a work or student visa.

  • Health and Character: You must meet health and character requirements.

  • Sufficient Funds: You must show that you or your partner have sufficient funds to cover your stay in New Zealand and return journey.

Application Process

  1. Collect Required Documents: Gather essential documents, including evidence of your relationship, financial support, and identity documents.

  2. Submit the Application: Complete and submit your application online.

  3. Pay the Fees: Pay the application fee, which varies depending on your location and the type of visa you're applying for.

  4. Interview or Verification: You may be required to attend an interview (although most applications are decided ‘on the papers’); or provide additional information to verify your relationship.

  5. Decision and Visa Issuance: After processing, you'll receive a decision on your visa application. If approved, you'll be issued a Partnership-Based Visitor Visa.

Visa Duration

  1. A Partnership-Based Visitor Visa is usually issued for a period of either 12 or 24 months if your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident, depending on your circumstances.

  2. If your partner is a work or student visa holder, your visa will be granted for the same period as their visa.

Partnership based Visas will often cause significant frustration for those applicants who may well be eligible applicants, but simply do not / or cannot supply INZ with the documentation required; and therefore, should not be underestimated. If you are having issues with documentation, or need help...

RESIDENCE PATHWAY

If you wish to make New Zealand your permanent home, the Partnership-Based Visitor Visa can serve as a steppingstone to residency. Having lived together for at least 12 months, you may become eligible for partnership-based residence.
