The New Zealand Government has announced major reforms to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, effective from August 2026, making it easier for skilled workers to gain residence by placing greater emphasis on practical experience and supporting employers to retain talent. The changes complement—not replace—the existing Green List pathways by introducing two new residence pathways under the SMC.
From 18 August 2025, ten new occupations will be added to the Green List Work to Residence pathway, allowing eligible migrants to apply for residence after just two years of relevant work experience in New Zealand. This marks a significant opportunity for tradespeople who have already made, or are considering making, New Zealand home.
