New Skilled Residence Pathways Announced for New Zealand: What You Need to Know

The New Zealand Government has announced the most significant changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa since the introduction of the six-point system in 2023. The reforms, which take effect in August 2026, are designed to make residence more accessible for skilled workers, better recognise practical experience, and help employers retain the talent they need.
Importantly, these changes do not replace the existing Green List pathways. Instead, they expand the Skilled Migrant Category by introducing two entirely new residence pathways.
Five Skilled Residence Pathways
From August 2026, there will be five pathways to Skilled Residence available:
Green List Tier 1 – Straight to Residence
Green List Tier 2 – Work to Residence
Skilled Migrant Category – Points Pathway
NEW – Skilled Work Experience Pathway
NEW – Trades & Technicians Pathway
This provides migrants with greater flexibility by recognising qualifications, professional registration, income and, for the first time, substantial skilled work experience as alternative routes to residence.
Two New Skilled Migrant Category Pathways
Skilled Work Experience Pathway
This new pathway recognises migrants who have built significant careers through practical experience rather than formal qualifications.
Applicants must:
work in an ANZSCO Skill Level 1–3 occupation
have at least five years of directly relevant skilled work experience
have completed two years of skilled employment in New Zealand
have earned at least 1.1 times the median wage throughout their qualifying New Zealand employment.
Trades & Technicians Pathway
This pathway has been specifically designed for skilled tradespeople and technicians working in occupations identified by Immigration New Zealand.
Applicants must:
work in an eligible trade or technician occupation
hold a relevant Level 4 (120-credit) qualification or higher
have at least four years of post-qualification skilled work experience
have completed 18 months of skilled employment in New Zealand
have been paid at least the median wage throughout that period.
These new pathways acknowledge the significant contribution made by experienced tradespeople and technically skilled workers to New Zealand's economy.
Changes to the Points Pathway
The existing six-point Skilled Migrant Category remains in place but has been updated.
The Government has increased the value of New Zealand tertiary qualifications, making it easier for international graduates to transition from study to residence.
Notable changes include:
New Zealand bachelor's degrees now attract five points
New Zealand honours, postgraduate diploma and postgraduate certificate qualifications also receive increased recognition
New Zealand master's degrees receive enhanced recognition within the points framework.
Applicants relying on overseas qualifications must continue to obtain an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), unless their qualification appears on the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment.
Less New Zealand Work Experience Required
One of the most welcome changes is the reduction in the amount of New Zealand work experience required under the points pathway.
Previously, applicants claiming three points often needed three years of skilled employment in New Zealand before becoming eligible for residence.
From August 2026, the maximum qualifying work experience requirement will generally reduce to two years, with some applicants requiring as little as 18 months.
This makes New Zealand's residence settings more competitive internationally while allowing skilled migrants to settle sooner.
Simplified Wage Requirements
The Government has also simplified how wage thresholds operate.
Under the current policy, applicants must satisfy the relevant wage threshold both when they begin their qualifying employment and again when they apply for residence.
From August 2026, applicants will instead need to maintain the required wage throughout their qualifying period of New Zealand employment. There will no longer be a separate requirement to meet an increased wage threshold at the time the residence application is lodged.
This change provides greater certainty for both employers and migrants.
Occupation Lists
The new pathways will also introduce occupation lists to ensure residence opportunities remain targeted towards genuine skill shortages.
Red List occupations will not be eligible under the new Skilled Work Experience or Trades & Technicians pathways, although applicants may still qualify through the existing Points Pathway or Green List pathways.
Amber List occupations will have additional eligibility requirements under the Skilled Work Experience Pathway and will not be eligible for the Trades & Technicians Pathway.
Other Residence Requirements Continue to Apply
The new pathways do not change the fundamental residence requirements. Applicants must still satisfy Immigration New Zealand's requirements relating to:
health
character
English language
genuine skilled employment
any applicable age or occupation-specific requirements.
What This Means for Employers and Skilled Migrants
These reforms represent a significant shift in New Zealand's skilled migration policy. By recognising practical experience alongside qualifications, reducing work experience requirements and simplifying wage settings, the Government has created more flexible pathways to residence while continuing to target genuinely skilled migrants.
For employers, the changes should improve the ability to attract and retain experienced workers. For migrants, they create new opportunities to obtain residence even where a traditional university qualification is not the primary basis for their skills.
At McSweeney Immigration Law, we are already assisting employers and migrants to assess which pathway will provide the strongest route to residence under the new framework. If you would like advice on how these changes apply to your circumstances, our team would be pleased to assist.
