To be eligible for a Partnership Visa, you must meet these key criteria:
Genuine Relationship: You and your partner must be in a genuine and stable relationship. This includes spouses, partners in a civil union, or de facto partners. Evidence of a loving and committed relationship is crucial, including joint responsibilities, shared financial commitments, and proof of living together.
Partner Eligibility: Your partner must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, or hold a work or student visa.
Health and Character: You must meet health and character requirements.
Sufficient Funds: You must show that you or your partner have sufficient funds to cover your stay in New Zealand and return journey.
Collect Required Documents: Gather essential documents, including evidence of your relationship, financial support, and identity documents.
Submit the Application: Complete and submit your application online.
Pay the Fees: Pay the application fee, which varies depending on your location and the type of visa you're applying for.
Interview or Verification: You may be required to attend an interview (although most applications are decided ‘on the papers’); or provide additional information to verify your relationship.
Decision and Visa Issuance: After processing, you'll receive a decision on your visa application. If approved, you'll be issued a Partnership-Based Visitor Visa.
A Partnership-Based Visitor Visa is usually issued for a period of either 12 or 24 months if your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident, depending on your circumstances.
If your partner is a work or student visa holder, your visa will be granted for the same period as their visa.
If you wish to make New Zealand your permanent home, the Partnership-Based Visitor Visa can serve as a steppingstone to residency. Having lived together for at least 12 months, you may become eligible for partnership-based residence.
